《当代西方文化学入门》是为英语本科生以及文化研究爱好者设计的一部入门级教材。全书以文化研究中的主要理论范式为线索，共分为六个章节。第一章是“基本概念”，其中包括文化定义、类型和功能，以及何为文化研究、文化研究的主要流派。第二章是“符号与文化”，主要介绍符号的类别、符号学的主要代表人物，以及符号、文化和意义之间的关系。第三章是“后殖民主义”，主要用马列的观点讨论殖民主义的嬗变、新殖民主义产生和后殖民主义的研究方法。第四章是“种族、族性：全球化与身份”，主要讨论在全球化语境下，围绕种族这个集体身份所发生的概念变化以及内涵的更新。第五章是“性别”，在讨论性别产生的机制的基础上，重点介绍“女性主义”流派和运动，以及妇女解放的社会重要意义。第六章是“现代性与城市空间”，主要介绍马克思主义的空间学者（Lefebvre和Sennett）的空间批评范式，指导学生解读物理空间的文化含义。
