石工、机电、材料、储运、工程力学等专业的本科生，由于涉及到大量的工程科学知识，所以其力学基础课的地位在其专业知识链中非常重要。随着国际学术与经济一体化越来越密切的趋势，来国内留学的外国学生越来越多。如何让他们尽快适应中国国情，并结合自身的实际情况学好工程力学的课程，编写一本有特色的工程力学教程迫在眉睫。各个留学生的文化基础参差不齐，但数理文化知识普遍要低于中国同年级学生的水平。再加上留学生语言交流方面存在障碍，因此，必须向他们提供适合他们自身情况的教材。很多留学生并没有基本的中学几何知识，另外绝大部分学生都没有受过足够的工程训练。因此编者刘建林希望通过编写《理论力学讲义(简化版普通高等教育十三五规划教材)(英文版)》，以便于他们课前预习、课后复习，同时也在布置作业方面提供一些便利。本教材首先回顾了本科生必备掌握的平面几何和空间几何的基本知识，然后补充了向量运算等内容。主要内容分为静力学、运动学和动力学三部分。其中静力学为主要部分，主要阐述了力系的简化和平衡、平面一般力系等内容。运动学以讲授刚体的平面运动为主。动力学部分阐述了动量、动量矩、动能等三大定理。
