本教材内容丰富，结构简洁明晰，大部分内容都选自近年来北美地区职业教育教材和文献资料。全书共分19个Unit，每个Unit根据专业内容不同分为1～3个Part，每个Unit都有内容简介、学习目标。每个Part有独立的课文、疑难句解释、专业术语、生词表、习题。课文内容和篇幅均经严格精简，以方便课堂教学时间的控制。习题则充分考虑了高职高专学生的训练特点，设有专业术语翻译、选择题、填空题、判断题、小段翻译等题型。同时，每一部分均精选一篇或几篇阅读短文，供学生课后自行阅读，以拓展学生的知识面和提高其阅读能力。教材最后安排的附录集中收集和归纳了环境专业英语学习中的疑难单词和术语，供学生查阅和学习，它既是学习内容，也可作为专业资料保存，对学生今后的专业英语学习具有重要意义。
本教材由四川工商职业技术学院付正祥任主编，辽宁经济职业技术学院吴昊任副主编，四川工商职业技术学院段琼、四川化工职业技术学院张欣参与了教材编写工作。其中，付正祥负责编写Unit6、7、8、12、13、14，吴吴负责编写Unit2、3、4、5，段琼负责编写Unit9、10、11、15、16，张欣负责编写Unit1、17、18、19。值得特别说明的是，书中多处内容的编写和初稿的审读是由多位编者协调配合、共同努力完成的。全书最后由付正祥统稿。
